Personal profile

Personal profile

Kirsty is a Senior Lecturer within the Equine Science Department. Her main research interests relate to anatomical symmetry and their link to performance and health within the Equid.

Kirsty is lead organiser for the Alltech-Hartpury National Student Conference and has a strong belief that research findings should be disseminated to improve both research quality and industry level knowledge.

Research interests

Kirsty's key research interests include:

  • Equine anatomical symmetry: the incidence and prevalence of functional and non-functional trait asymmetry, its impacts on, or its reflection of, health and performance within the competitive and non-competitive Equid.
  • Equine conformation: the association between conformation, performance ability and injury prevalence.
  • Hoof conformation: the health and geometry of the hoof in relation to the internal and external loading placed on it, its role in compensating for asymmetries in structure or load.
  • Management of the equine hoof: shoeing, trimming, the use of studs in relation to hoof health, performance and biomechanics.

Current Teaching

Kirsty leads on the equine anatomy and physiology, exercsie physiology and sports medicine related modules delivered to the undergraduate honours degree programmes in addition to the postgraduate equine exercsie physiology module. Kirsty manages the MRes Equestrian Performance, the MSc Equine Science and the equien related PG Diploma' and PG Certificates.
