In gymnastics, likewise all artistic sports, a special consideration is given to the external appearance. Likewise any other sports, a significant number of gymnasts are not aware of the prohibited substances list and neither of the possible detrimental effects of excessive supplementation. Several health issues related to gymnastics have been the centre of ongoing debate for the last 15 years. Amongst these issues: body composition and its relation to a high volume of training combined with inadequate diet and also hormonal regulation, growth and sexual development. Several investigations have confirmed that a significant percentage of elite gymnasts are familiar with the use of nutritional aids. A questionnaire study amongst the Greek elite gymnasts showed that 58% have taken nutritional supplements following their doctor's recommendation. It has become evident that gymnasts have a very low body fat percentage and a very low body mass index when compare to normal age and gender matched groups, particularly noticeable in females.
